Making Active Play a Requirement for Kids

An article by Liz Szabo in today’s edition of USA Today, Protecting Kids’ Health in Spades, resonated with me, so I thought I would share it here. I brought up my two sons in an urban setting, in New York City. They did have access to sports and both boys were involved with Manhattan Kickers Soccer in the fall and the Peter Stuyvesant Little League in the spring, in addition to golf at the driving range at Chelsea Piers on occasion, perhaps there could have been more opportunities for active play. This article has some easily executable tips for parents including:

  • Schedule family meals
  • Start a garden
  • Make healthy lifestyle choices
  • Turn off the tv (my personal favorite)
  • Organize your neighbors
